New Dirtbag Phone Phishing Technique

Well, it seems the phone-spammers have learned a new trick.  I guess enough people stopped answering their phones when the caller ID said “Out of Area” or “Toll Free Call” with what turns out to be a bogus phone number, so they’ve gone one step further.

Now they’re putting bogus names in the caller ID.  For instance, today’s “Do not be alarmed, but this is your last chance for lower interest rates” call.  One “Anderson, James” at (863) 467-8918 called me at 1038 to offer me just that.  To be helpful, I pressed ‘1 to talk to a live agent’.  I asked for James Anderson, and after getting silence in reply, I added that if there is no James Anderson, there is a federal felony being committed.

He promised to not call me.  As if.  Alas, judging by his accent, I’d say he and his entire call center are out of the reach of the federal government.

There’s got to be something we can do to stop this crap.  Oh, I’ve got an idea, HOW ABOUT EVERYONE HANG UP ON THE FUCKERS.

If they aren’t getting what they want (credit card numbers), they’ll find a new tactic that doesn’t involve wasting my time with telephone calls.

FAIL TEST!

See if you can find all the FAIL in this picture:

Closing the house that Ruth Built.

Congratulations, Jose Molina.  You are now the answer to a trivia question.

I would have liked to be there for the last game, but I could have bought another motorcycle for the price of a ticket.

Bailout? Bail WHO out?

I’ve got a lot to say on this, but none of it makes sense.  So you’ll have to wait.

Suffice it to say that I am not sure that the bailout as proposed is going to work.

He’s not human.

Tommy Emmanuel.  Un. Real.

The future?

What does it say for the future of mankind if I’m smarter than 95% of the people on the planet?

And I’m an idiot?

Mr. Dell goes to China.

Dell’s outsourcing their manufacturing.  What else is new.  But if this comment on /. is correct, they’re totally fucked:

You make a point, but you’ve missed the larger picture. I am a Dell employee and I can tell you the future of the company is not manufacturing PCs or notebooks, but rather offering services-after-the sale for the machines built by contract manufacturers.

Well, if you’re planning to offer “services after the sale”, what do you have to offer that’s going to get me to open my wallet?  I bought my last laptop 4 years ago.  Do you know how much contact I’ve had with the manufacturer since I got it?  None.  No services.  No upgrades.  I didn’t buy the extended warranty.  I haven’t sent the unit in for service.  Granted, I can replace my own keyboard when it wears out, but I didn’t even buy THAT from them, I got it from an overstock place on the internet.

If Dell thinks that they are going to make money the way that car dealerships do, they’re mad.  Of course, they aren’t.  The real reason they’re outsourcing the manufacturing is money.  They can have machines built in China for half of what it costs to build them in Round Rock.  And you can bet your last dollar that they won’t be dropping their prices.

Heart (you remember them, right)

Ok, I’m old.  So sue me.  Actually, don’t.

So the Republicans decide to capitalize on the nickname of Sarah ‘barracuda’ Palin.

And Heart decides to send them a Cease and Desist for their trouble.

Now, I can’t say for sure, but I’d be really surprised if the Republicans and Democrats didn’t both have persons or departments whose sole job was to ensure that nobody’s licensed properties were being stepped on.  The last thing they need is the RIAA/ASCAP/BMI breathing down their neck, not to mention the whole campaign finance issue this opens up.  Which leads to the next interesting little tidbit: in all but the rarest of cases (and again, I don’t know the specifics here) musicians — especially before the internet and self-publishing came of age — don’t own the distribution rights to their music.

So the Wilson sisters can cry all they like about how they don’t want any mean old Republicans using their song, but they likely have no say in the matter because it’s highly unlikely that the rights to use the song haven’t already been purchased.

Cancel the election.

It’s nothing but a formality now.  Last night’s speech by Sarah Palin was a grand slam over the right field fence.

For all the media did in trying to destroy her and her entire family over the past five days, they achieved nothing.

Palin destroyed their chosen one and his assassination insurance.

This election is now McCain’s to lose.  But I don’t see that happening.  McCain by 20 points, at least.
