Somehow, I managed to hose the database. I don’t know quite how, but I hosed it real good like. Since I had so little in the gallery, I just blanked it and created a fresh db in MySQL5 and reimported my pictures. What little commentary I may have added I’ll hunt down and put back in the fullness of time.
I’m also going to start uploading more stuff. And with the new camera, I’ll have more stuff already digital.

In the process of upgrading to Gallery 2.2, I nuked my installation. How? Stupidity. I figured “hey, why not take this opportunity to migrate the database to MySQL 5″. Bad move. Something got horked in the database move, and most of the pretty went with it. And it was down hill from there. It was only about 50 pictures, so no harm, no foul -I’ll just re-import them and everything will be fine.
Long story short: I wiped it out, and started with a clean slate. I know it was the database move because doing the same thing to my mother’s gallery without changing the database yielded a perfect upgrade. Of course, since I haven’t shown her how to use it yet, she has no pictures in it.
Lesson - upgrade one thing at a time, kids.

All this kvetching about “Global Warming” would tend to indicate that there is some ‘ideal’ global mean temperature, and through man’s emissions of carbon dioxide we have caused the temperature to rise above that ideal. Is this ideal temperature knowable?
The concern over the so-called Greenhouse Effect seems predicated upon the belief that the global mean temperature can and will increase without bound. Is this possible within the confines of a closed, self-correcting system? If not, then what is the maximum attainable temperature before the system self-corrects. Is life sustainable at that temperature?
The talk of ‘carbon credits’ implies that creating a mechanism for removing CO2 from the air will somehow nullify its effect. Will the increased water vapor output of new forests outweigh the impact of the removed CO2?
I do not think it wise to begin talking of policy prescriptions to ’solve’ global warming before we know what the real impact is, if there is a real impact, or if that impact is worse than the proposed lifestyle changes that would be imposed upon us to possibly stave off such an impact.
Because if the answer to stopping global warming from killing a million people is to kill a billion instead, I’m not so sure that global warming is a bad thing.

Seriously. I get mail all the time with no name in the return address, no logo or text on the envelope. Just a return address somewhere in Delaware, usually Wilmington.
And every single time, it’s yet another application from some company promising me a GREAT LOW INTRODUCTORY RATE!
Is there some way to just reject all mail from Delaware? Seriously - I don’t actually do business with anyone there, and I don’t know anyone in Delaware.
All these guys are doing is making work for my shredder.

Norman Hsu, regular joe. Or so he’d like you to think. This is John Huang all over again. A guy of meager means is the bag man for someone who is legally forbidden from influencing U.S. elections. And we’re not supposed to notice? After the sham that was McCain-Feingold, I’d think anyone contributing large amounts is going to set off alarm bells.
Of course, the media is TRYING to downplay this. After all, Nancy Pelosi promised us the most open, honest Congress in history. The Democrats were going to eliminate the Republican “culture of corruption”.
There are probably people out there who want to say “so what” to this. I say it is important. More important than the entire Jack Abramoff escapade.
Because the Democrats were supposed to be different.
Because the Democrats were supposed to be better.
